Extraordinary Ministers of CommunionSpecial or Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are lay people who help with the distribution of Communion during Mass. At most celebrations of Mass there is only one priest and no deacon so special ministers are needed so that the time taken for Communion is not disproportionately long. Prior to their designation to the ministry they are required to undertake training and be commissioned by a public rite of designation.
Communion ministers need to have respect for people and for the Eucharist, show a caring approach inside and outside the liturgy, be comfortable making contact with people with eyes, words and hands and be willing to serve others.
